CHSG Academy’s “From Canvas to Code” Masterclass Made One Thing Clear: Creativity Is Now the Competitive Advantage

There is a question that Peter Tafu opened with that most people in tech have never seriously considered: what would happen if all the designers disappeared?

The systems would still run. The code would still compile. The apps would technically still work. But nobody would want to use them.

That was the premise CHSG Academy built its “From Canvas to Code” design masterclass around on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, at The Bunker, Oke-Ilewo, Ogun State. And by the time the two-hour session was over, it had made a compelling case that the conversation around tech talent in Nigeria has been missing something important.

Babatunde, UX/UI Designer and Design Lead at CHSG Academy, anchored his session around a distinction that sounds simple but cuts deep. Programming answers the question “Can we build it?” Design answers a different question entirely: “Should we build it?” Developers create functionality. Designers create meaning. Both are necessary, but only one of them determines whether people actually connect with what gets built.

He walked the room through the full design journey, from problem identification and user research through wireframing, prototyping, and testing, making the point that developers implement direction but rarely create it. The creative leads. The engineer follows.

Peter Tafu, Creative Design Lead at CHSG Technologies, brought a different angle to the same argument. His session centered on brand psychology and what he described as the hidden language of design. Every color choice, every typographic decision, every visual element sends a signal before a user reads a single word. “People buy emotionally, then justify logically,” he told the room. “Everything communicates.”

Tafu used a simple comparison to make the business case concrete. A company with the best developers but no designers captures roughly 35 percent of market success. A company with average developers but exceptional creatives captures 95 percent. The numbers are not about dismissing technical skill. They are about understanding that without creativity, technology becomes invisible.

Both speakers also addressed the AI question directly. AI can generate code at scale, design interface variations, write content, and automate repetitive tasks. What it cannot do is empathize with real human needs, exercise strategic judgment, frame problems creatively, or understand cultural and emotional context. The conclusion from both sessions was the same: technology changes, but human behavior does not. The skills that connect people to products will always be in demand.

Tafu closed with a reflection on his own journey. “When I started, I thought good design was about beauty,” he said. “Over time, I realized beauty is only a small part. What really creates value is solving problems.”

For Ogun State’s creative and tech ecosystem, Wednesday’s masterclass was a reminder that the next generation of builders needs more than coding skills. It needs people who understand psychology, strategy, empathy, and business well enough to shape not just what gets built, but why it gets built and how it makes people feel.
